Hilton at Logan Airport

Boston, MA

Architect: Cambridge Seven Associates Ltd

Contractor: Beacon | Skanska

The designers of the Hilton Hotel at Logan Airport in Boston initially wanted a different type of exterior cladding, such as metal or glass. They soon realized, however, that precast concrete was the best solution. Not only did precast concrete offer a wide range of interesting styles, it also provided a sound barrier to dampen the noise of nearby airplane traffic.

The architects designed a stunning pattern, taking advantage of the variety of textures, colors, finishes and false joints that can be produced with concrete. The components were cast in two colors and two finishes: a brick-red that dominates most of the building, accented by a tan color. The changing angle of the sun striking the building also creates the effect of yet a third color tone.

The project required the preparation of more than 50 polyurethane molds. The project received aPCI design award in 2000, Best Hotel category.
